Course Overview

Mentoring is a professional and trusted relationship between two people with a meaningful commitment to support and challenge the mentee to help them meet their career and professional development goals.

This practical one-day course is delivered by an expert in their field and focuses on the core skills, behaviours and techniques needed to be a mentor of the highest professional standard.

This highly interactive course enables participants to practice the fundamental skills of mentoring through a series of discussions, interactive exercises and case studies. It will enable participants to understand the context within which being a mentor works most effectively.

Who is this course for?

This course will be relevant to first time mentors and to those who have already started mentoring but have not had any formal or recent training. It will be of particular interest to those who are supporting mentees with specific career development goals, such as Professional Registration.

Key Learning Outcomes

After attendance at this workshop, mentors will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between a coach and a mentor
  • Understand their role as a mentor and how to establish a mutually beneficial relationship with a mentee to ensure a clear purpose and direction for the mentoring
  • Conduct the key stages in the mentoring process including: pairing, contracting, boundary setting and maintenance, offering guidance and managing the relationship to conclusion
  • Recognise the importance of developing a detailed personal picture of the mentee and how age, personality, culture and preferred learning styles, for example, can impact upon the mentoring relationship
  • Implement techniques to deal with stressful and emotional situations in an objective manner
  • Manage resistance to constructive criticism
  • Accurately consider issues of confidentiality in the mentoring relationship
  • Implement the different levels of listening and the appropriate use of questions
  • Understand and describe the steps involved in becoming professionally registered
  • Understand how to effectively share their experience and knowledge with a mentee and how to draw this out of the mentee
  • Know when to draw the mentoring relationship to an end
  • Evaluate mentoring sessions effectively.
