The President’s Biography

Ken Shapland is a graduate in Applied Chemistry and has been working for Severn Trent Water since 1978.   He started with the company as a process scientist and has also had roles in capital investment and sewage treatment operational management.

Ken's current role in Severn Trent is to interpret and understand environmental regulations and to advise how they apply to company activities. He also provides advice to the company on compliance issues.

This role is particularly relevant in Severn Trent Water's current energy from waste programme where clarity on regulatory requirements is important in developing strategies to increase the generation of power and heat from renewable sources.
On behalf of the water industry, Ken is involved in influencing and improving the quality of new regulations in the UK and Europe. He is the chair of water industry groups for both waste and sludge regulation.

Professionally he is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and is a Chartered Chemist and a Chartered Scientist. He has been closely involved with CIWEM since 1985, serving as East Midlands Representative to Council and Branch Chairman before being elected to Council. As President of the Institution, he is a member of the new Trustee Board.

His outside activities include walking and sea fishing but most of his spare time is taken up with hockey as a qualified umpire and coach. He also still plays as often as possible.
